Samaritan Biologics Intern Profile: Karma Rini
Karma interned with Samaritan Biologics during the summer of 2023. At the time, she was a junior at Clemson University studying Bioengineering. During her internship, Karma worked on several projects including developing CAD models to modify an existing surgical instrument to function more effectively with a surgeon from Loma Linda University and an orthopedic design engineer with 30 years of industry experience. She also authored a literature review focused on defining the clinical evidence for using perinatal tissue allografts in Robot Assisted Radical Prostatectomy cases. Karma also was able to have a hands-on lab experience processing amniotic/chorionic membranes and toured a contract manufacturing facility to learn how donated human tissues are processed into grafts that help patients heal. When asked about the value of her Samaritan internship experience, Karma said:
“The Samaritan Biologics team provided me with opportunities that I wouldn’t have gained without their guidance. I was challenged by my mentors, which allowed me to grow confidence in my writing and professional skills. I was exposed to multiple industries, the manufacturing process, and the ‘behind the scenes’ business involved with medical device development. Over the course of my internship, I drafted portions of a literature review for publication, collaborated with surgeons and engineers, aided in prototype design, and obtained hands-on experience with human tissue! I was given the opportunity to make connections with other leaders in the medical device industry, doctors, and engineers of varying backgrounds. This team genuinely cared for my learning experience and continually wants to provide exposure and knowledge as I continue my career in becoming a biomedical engineer someday. What I have learned will stick with me and impact my future significantly. “
Karma is currently finishing up her undergraduate degree in Bioengineering at Clemson University and plans to enter in the Clemson’s Master of Engineering program in Fall of 2024. Her professional / research interests include cardiovascular devices, orthopedic devices, and regenerative medicine. Karma’s professional goals include working in industry, conducting research and developing solutions to improve the lives of those affected by Scoliosis and other Spinal Conditions, as well as those affected by cardiovascular disease.
